Teds Nottingham - My Recommendations for Tourists and Locals

The Coffee House

Superb Cafe - put address here!

Alley Cafe

A Good Vege Cafe opposite the library and art gallery.

War Memorial Garden

Discretely back of the lawn area by the River Trent. Under-used and not getting the money spent on it that it merits. Fountain and pools in an Italian kind of style. There's something about the neglect that adds to it's charm as an oasis of quiet and peace.

The Cha'an Buddhists and the Theosophical Society Hall

Cha'an is the Chinese word for Zen. They meet at the hall one a week. The hall is not much from the outside but inside it's a throwback to an old age of gentleman's (& ladies) societies dedicated to the study of natural philosophy and the philosophy of life. The books cases contain hundreds of old books with the most wonderful titles. The walls have pictures of the leading lights of the Theosophical Society and related documents. They are a good meditation group for anyone into that sort of thing, if not I'm sure if you leave a couple of quid donation they would let you spend 5 or ten minutes looking at the walls before they get dpwn to business.

The Central Market Square

No need to list it coz it's hard to miss. It's just a really good piece of modernisation. The old lions in front of the town hall(?) are notable as a meeting point. If someone says 'I'll meet you at 7:30 at the left lion' you'll know what they mean now. I never found out if it was the left lion as you faced the building or the other way round.

The Levels Above Sneinton

Not the most salubrious part of town and you have to look carefully at your map to find the way in. Two levels of flattened off hill ridge rendered ugly by a horrible containing metal fence around part of it. I assume the fence was pit there to stop vandalisation of the sports fields and to stop the burning of stolen vehicles which seemed to be pretty frequent. Forget that human stuff - this is for nature. Get up there and look towards the city centre as sun set approaches. The lights of the city centre and tops of tall buildings are contained in a bowl of surrounding hills behind and look absolutely gorgeous.

Nottingham Pubs and Music

Nottingham is great Real Area. Pubs listed for personal liking reasons not judging the beer.

The Bell Inn

Old pub, good ale and the names of all the landlords (and landlordesses) of the past 300 and something years. Lively jazz music (free).

The Malt Cross

Great interior - huge spacious. Go up to the top floor and look down into the main bar. Has some good live music.

The Maze

Great music bar. You can listen to the music from the main bar and if you like it pay to go in. try before you buy - I like it. Beer's good to.

The Lord Nelson in Sneinton

A most unlikely thing - a country pub in the middle of a working class suburb. Good ale, lots of rooms including secluded areas, very big garden, a nice mix of different types of people a pub like they used to be - good to know some still are. I used to go past it on the way home from work and enjoyed the happy sounding hub-bub coming through the hedge from the garden.
